In order to effectively teach and develop engaging, creative and student centred lessons, having a deep understanding of the content is crucial.
Students learn when they are appropriately challenged, and require information to be communicated and taught differently. I am very passionate about using visuals inside and outside the classroom. Using pictures, diagrams and videos, when used effectively can provide meaning to content in an engaging way.
I'm also a strong believer in relating content to real life situations and practical experiences. This allows the content to be meaningful and relevant to the individual student. The image to the left is an example of how teaching the content can be used in a practical experience. The image shows a group of Year 10 students on an Outdoor Education orienteering excursion. Students are learning about navigation, maps and compasses through guided discovery. It is experiences such as these that promote learning and make the content meaningful.

Knowing how to teach the content in an engaging and motivating way is essential for a successful lesson. Students can easily become disengaged in learning and it is our job to ensure that lessons are fun and enrich student learning. Implementing ICT in the classroom with programs such as Kahoot, Padlet, YouTube and Survey Monkey allows students the opportunity to engage in learning through a variety of teaching strategies.
