The poster below is an example of how I have worked to create a safe and challenging learning environment for my students.

As a teacher our students safety and wellbeing is one of our biggest priorities in and outside the classroom. As a Physical Education and Outdoor Education teacher there are often times where risk can be involved. Student safety is paramount for successful running of lessons both in the school and outside of the school. Within this comes a large responsibility. To the right is an example of me ensuring the safety of the students. The image is of a group of year 11 students on surf camp. My role was to run a safety briefing for all the students before surfing including; weather conditions, wind, rips, tides and safety procedures. I was also responsible for ensuring their safety during the surfing experience. This is also a regular occurrence for me through my work at Lord Somers Camp. On a daily bases I am in charge of groups of students of up to 25 on the water and in the bush. I take these responsibilities extremely seriously and believe that as an educator students safety is our number one priority.
I believe that school should represent a safe place where students can express their individuality. Lessons and activities should involve maximum participation and limited exclusion. An important aspect of my teaching is working towards creating games and activities that avoid exclusion.
Students not only need to be physically safe during learning, but also mentally and emotionally safe. Having an inclusive classroom is vital for the wellbeing of the students. As a teacher it is important to provide students an environment they feel safe from exclusion and feel accepted. |
Safety considerations in lesson planning
Below are examples of how I work to create a safe environment as noted in my lesson plans for both Physical Education and Outdoor Education.
